Novembre is an iconic Italian atmospheric metal band formed in 1990 by brothers Carmelo and Giuseppe Orlando. Emerging from the early death metal underground, they evolved into pioneers of the European atmospheric and progressive doom scene with landmark albums such as Wish I Could Dream It Again…, Classica, Novembrine Waltz, Materia, and The Blue. After a long hiatus, the band returned with URSA (2016) and now with their ninth studio album Words of Indigo, produced by Dan Swanö and featuring Ann-Mari Edvardsen. With a renewed lineup and a legacy of innovation, Novembre continues to push the boundaries of emotional, immersive metal.

NOVEMBRE RETURN WITH NEW ALBUM WORDS OF INDIGO – (7 NOVEMBER)

NEW SINGLE ‘HOUSE OF RAIN’ OUT TODAY WITH NEW VIDEO. FEATURES GUEST VOCALIST ANN-MARI EDVARDSEN

THE NINTH STUDIO ALBUM FROM THE LONGSTANDING ITALIAN PIONEERS OF ATMOSPHERIC AND MELODIC DOOM/DEATH METAL

Italian masters of doom Novembre are back today with the second single from their new album Words Of Indigo, set for release on 7th November. Speaking about the new track, titled House Of Rain, songwriter Carmelo Orlando shared –

“The moment the main motif of House Of Rain poured out, I knew we had something special. It’s not the kind of theme you stumble upon every day. It’s an instant sing-along and had to be handled with special care if we didn’t want it to go to waste on a two-bit tune. That’s why we decided to put extra effort into putting this track together. Once it was done, I felt it needed another vocal line an octave higher to go along with mine. That’s where the idea of female vocals came in. Luckily, one of my all-time favourite singers, Ann-Mari Edvardsen, ex-singer of the Norwegian legends The 3rd and the Mortal—with whom we had already collaborated years ago on the album Novembrine Waltz—had just moved to my hometown in Sicily. It only felt natural to give her a call and suggest a second collaboration, which, to my surprise, she happily accepted. So I flew back to Sicily to meet her in a studio, and that’s where the magic happened.

Then the band was phenomenal, the rhythm section thundering ahead like a train, and the central solo lifted the piece to soaring heights.
And like something out of a fate-driven novel, it all came together—Ann-Mari, my return to the old country—and the lyrics could only be about an old house, the houses we leave behind, and the silence they must have carried all those years without us kids tearing through its rooms. Do they miss us? Do they feel lonely?”

NOVEMBRE RETURN WITH NEW ALBUM WORDS OF INDIGO – (7 NOVEMBER)

NEW SINGLE ‘YOUR HOLOCENE’ OUT NOW

Coinciding with 35 years since Novembre’s original inception under the Catacomb moniker, and after an extended period of inactivity following the release of 2016’s acclaimed ‘URSA’ album, the newly reinvigorated Italian pioneers of atmospheric doom/death metal return with their most elaborately adorned and sonically refined opus to date in the shape of ninth studio album, ‘Words of Indigo’, set for release on 7 November. Today the band have shared the first single from the album, titled ‘Your Holocene’.

Speaking about the new track, songwriter Carmelo Orlando shared “The main riff of this track is deeply rooted in the ‘80s, whether AOR or pop-rock. It’s hard to say exactly where it has sprung from, but I just know it’s extremely catchy — a true earworm. This song practically wrote itself — its structure was ready within a couple of hours. The lyrics describe a primal soul, coming from a distant era – raw, rough, yet pure. A state of being in which many people are forced to live their existence, trapped with no way out, unaware of their rarity, purity, and yet, capacity to cause harm.”

An exquisite and finely-textured display of creative prowess exploring themes of danger and innocence, fear and nostalgia, this latest journey takes us through the torrents of raging death metal and sweeping, uplifting passages of serene poignancy, all woven together as finely crafted and layered melodic epics.

Novembre also features new blood for ‘Words of Indigo’, following the recent departure of longstanding member Massimiliano Pagliuso, with the introduction to the line-up of Fabio Fraschini (bass), Alessio Erriu (guitar), Federico Albanese (guitar), and Yuri Croscenko (drums). The album also notably features a guest appearance by Ann-Mari Edvardsen, known for her former work with Norwegian greats, The 3rd & the Mortal, on the anthemic ode to reflection, ‘House of Rain’.

Mixing and mastering work was carried out by legendary producer extraordinaire, Dan Swanö (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath) at Unisound Studios. Artwork for ‘Words of Indigo’ was created by renowned artist Travis Smith (Opeth, Katatonia).

Check out the song “Days of Nova” from the rejuvenated Italian maestros of atmospheric metal, Novembre – featured exclusively on the new Volume ’25 label sampler CD.

“This track is a little miracle on its own. At first, it was conceived as an instrumental, then relegated to the B-sides/Bonus area, and finally discarded altogether. Then, out of the blue, right in the middle of mixing the upcoming album — Peaceville asks us for a track for the “Volume ‘25” compilation, and it had to be short. Our minds immediately went to DAYS OF NOVA, which — in just three days — was literally unearthed and brought back from hell.
There was no time to properly record it, so we decided to use the demo tracks — which totally suck. Oh, you have no idea! But that’s the thing; you’ll never notice — because this is where the supernatural hand of Dan Swanö comes into play. In just half a day, he managed to create this living entity — it sounds like a million bucks, moves, breathes, and speaks to your soul! Yes, in music, the strangest things happen! ENJOY!”

URSA’ is the seventh and latest album from Italy’s atmospheric death/doom metal purveyors, Novembre.

After a period of inactivity since 2007’s ‘The Blue’, which involved the departure of longstanding member Giuseppe Orlando, Novembre returns with a new set of potent and poignant tracks, effortlessly transitioning between soothing, epic, melancholy and intense, from what is one of the originators of the whole atmospheric death/doom scene. Headed by founding member and writer Carmelo Orlando, & with a reinvigorated musical alliance with Massimiliano Pagliuso, the line-up is completed by Fabio Fraschini (previously bassist on the ‘Materia’ album), and David Folchitto on drums. There is also a special guest appearance from Anders Nyström of the Swedish Doom masters KATATONIA, adding his own unique ‘cold’ touch to the album’s single track ‘Annoluce’.

‘URSA’ was recorded at Blue Noise Studio, and PlayRec studio by Massimiliano Pagliuso, then mixed and mastered at Unisound Studios by Dan Swanö (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath), Cover art comes courtesy of Travis Smith.

Carmelo Orlando comments on ‘URSA’:

”This album is a very important step in my life. It got me closer to what some may call ‘maturity’. I’ve been able to delve even deeper into the chasm of the subconscious and unearth gems I didn’t think existed. Lyrically and conceptually I explored new shores. I moved my ever-inwards headlights, and for the first time I dared to point them outwards, against the squalor of this Orwellian apocalypse we’re committing towards the Earth and its sons, on a daily basis, in quasi-total indifference.
The album is indeed called URSA (the acronym for “Union des Républiques Socialistes Animales”), which was the title initially chosen for the French translation of George Orwell’s masterpiece novel ‘Animal Farm’.”

The seeds of Novembre were originally planted in September 1990 in Rome, Italy. Then known as Catacomb, their early recordings of unusual gothic doom metal were to quickly gain the band interest. It was around 1993 that the band decided that a name change was in order, and Novembre was born, evolving into one of the premiere European atmospheric doom bands.

Watch out for Novembre on tour in 2016.

NOVEMBRE BIOGRAPHY

Novembre’s origins trace back to September 1990, when brothers Carmelo Orlando (guitars, vocals) and Giuseppe Orlando (drums) formed their first band, Catacomb. About a year later, in November 1991, they released their debut demo Unreal. Despite its raw sound, the recording quickly attracted attention within the rising death metal underground.

In early 1993, the band issued the 7’’ EP The Return of the Ark through Sacra Sindore Records. Its unusual blend of melancholic gothic doom, classic influences, and death metal elements generated significant underground exposure. Soon after, the band changed its name to Novembre, feeling the original moniker no longer reflected their rapidly evolving musical identity. Around this time, Novembre signed with Polyphemus Records.

In the fall of 1994, the band recorded their acclaimed debut album Wish I Could Dream It Again… at Dan Swanö’s Unisound Studios—during the same creative wave that saw many foundational atmospheric metal acts shaping the genre. Novembre quickly emerged among the pioneers of this nascent sound.

Two years later, Novembre released their second album, Arte Novecento, a deeper and darker evolution of their style. In the spring of 1997, guitarist Massimiliano Pagliuso joined the lineup, and by late 1998 the band signed a worldwide deal with Century Media Records.

Months of intense rehearsal led to Classica, recorded in 1999 at the band’s Outer Sound Studios in Rome and mixed by Andy LaRocque at Los Angered Studios in Gothenburg. Released in early 2000, Classica was supported by a European tour with Moonspell, Kreator, and Witchery, as well as an appearance at Leipzig’s Wave Gotik Treffen Festival, where their performance earned them an invitation to return the following year.

The follow-up, Novembrine Waltz, was recorded once again at Outer Sound Studios and mixed at Sound Suite Studios in Marseille by producer Terje Refsnes (Tristania, Sins of Thy Beloved, Morgul). The album was supported by a European tour alongside longtime friends Opeth and Katatonia in late 2001—a highlight in the band’s career.

With Wish I Could Dream It Again… long sold out and increasingly sought after, Novembre chose to revisit their debut. In summer 2002, they re-recorded the album—joined by former members Thomas Negrini (keyboards) and Antonio Poletti (guitars)—and released it under a new name: Dreams d’Azur. The reinterpretation preserved the spirit of the original while giving fans access to a modern, definitive version of the songs.

As tensions grew between the band and their label, both parties amicably agreed to part ways. Their newfound independence quickly drew the attention of Peaceville Records—an iconic label whose legacy deeply influenced Novembre’s artistic DNA. It was a natural pairing.

Beginning in 2004, the band focused on creating what would become Materia, their fifth and most celebrated release. Written in isolation and recorded at Outer Sound Studios, the album’s rhythm guitars and final mix were completed at Helsinki’s Finnvox Studios. Released in April 2006, Materiamarked a creative peak and led to major performances, including two UK shows supporting My Dying Bride in 2005.

Immediately afterward, Novembre began work on The Blue, recorded through 2006–2007 at Outer Sound Studios and mixed again at Finnvox. The artwork was created by renowned artist Travis Smith, and a video was produced for the opening track “Anaemia.” Released in late 2007, The Blue was widely praised, particularly by fans of the band’s earlier, heavier works. Live appearances included a UK tour with Paradise Lost.

As the music industry underwent a severe collapse and the digital era reshaped global markets, the band chose to retreat into a period of dormancy. This long hiatus allowed each member to re-evaluate personal and artistic priorities. Eventually, Giuseppe Orlando departed to focus on other projects.

Carmelo, however, continued composing. Reuniting creatively with Massimiliano, he entered the studio in May 2015 to craft a new album. The project brought in exceptional musicians: bassist Fabio Fraschini (also featured on Materia), drummer David Folchitto, and Anders Nyström of Katatonia, who contributed a standout solo to the single “Annoluce.” Dan Swanö—who shaped the band’s earliest material and helped define an era of death and atmospheric metal—handled mixing and mastering.

The result was URSA, Novembre’s seventh album and the first to introduce socially conscious, animal-rights–themed lyrics. Released on March 25th, 2016 by Peaceville Records, URSA was supported by an extensive European tour and major festival appearances, including Rock in Rome with British gore-metal pioneers Carcass and the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise from Miami to the Caribbean.

Toward the end of 2019, just as the band prepared to begin their next album, the global COVID-19 pandemic halted all activity indefinitely. Rather than begin a project that might be delayed or frozen for years, the band chose to wait until a full return to normal life was possible, ensuring that the new material would genuinely represent their creative identity.

With the world reopened, Novembre began forging their ninth studio album in November 2022: Words of Indigo.

Once again, the band entrusted production to Dan Swanö. The album also features a stunning vocal performance by Ann-Mari Edvardsen (ex–The 3rd and the Mortal), who joins Carmelo on the haunting track “House of Rain.”

During this period, longtime guitarist Massimiliano Pagliuso decided to pursue a career outside the music world. However, the band welcomed renewed energy into the lineup: bassist Fabio Fraschiniofficially rejoined, accompanied by Alessio Erriu (guitars), Federico Albanese (guitars), and Yuri Croscenko (drums). This new formation marks a bold and revitalized chapter in Novembre’s evolution.
